Ford Performance has posted a video of its Ford Mustang GT3 race car testing at Sebring – and the Blue Oval’s boss Jim Farley has suggested that a road-going version could be in the works.
Shortly after posting the video on Twitter, Farley posed the question: “Should we make a road version?”.
This has fuelled fresh rumours that the Mustang GT3 racer will feed back into Ford Performance’s road car development program to create an extreme version of the two-door coupe that could make the Mustang Shelby GT500 look tame in comparison.

If confirmed for production, expect Ford to mirror the wild and outlandish aerodynamics seen on the latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
Count on a huge rear wing with racer-style swan-neck mounts, a dramatic wide body, massive diffuser and aggressive front splitter, plus all manner of openings to vent the wheel-arches and add extra cooling for the naturally-aspirated V8 under the bonnet.
This GT3 racer for the road would be positioned above the S650-series Ford Mustang Dark Horse – the fastest version of the sixth-generation pony car to date, kicking out 373kW/567Nm from its enhanced 5.0-litre Coyote V8.
Full performance figures have yet to be released, but with weight-saving parts like the full carbon-fibre rims sourced from Geelong’s Carbon Revolution, the Dark Horse is expected to come close to matching the Shelby GT350 in the 0-100km/h sprint (4.5sec).
If the GT3 road car is green-lit for production, Ford Performance could call on the services of Canadian-based Multimatic to help produce low-volume parts for what’s set to be the most extreme Mustang ever.
The engineering firm was instrumental in the development of the Ford GT and the latest third-generation GT Supercar.
