Toyota Australia has launched the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla locally, with the highly-anticipated hot hatchback priced from $62,300 plus on-road costs. Local deliveries start soon, with 700 units of the GTS due this year – that’s in addition to the higher-spec hardcore Morizo Edition, of which just 25 units will be sold locally in 2023. Mechanically, the GR Corolla shares the same 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine and all-wheel drive system as the legendary GR Yaris.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the arrival of the all-new GR Corolla represented a landmark occasion for the nameplate.
“For decades Corolla has been one of Australia’s most-loved models, selling over 1.5 million units after having first arrived in 1967,” Mr Hanley said.
“Motorsport has long been a part of Corolla’s DNA, so to have a fully-fledged hot hatch version of our venerable small car is a huge thrill.”
Under the bonnet of the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla is the same 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine as the GR Yaris, though boosted to 221kW of power (at 6,500rpm) and 370Nm of torque (from 3,000rpm to 5,500rpm) in the GTS, and 400Nm of torque (from 3,250rpm to 4,600rpm) in the Morizo Edition.
The claimed 0-100km/h sprint time for the GTS is 5.29 seconds, which lowers slightly to 5.21 seconds in the Morizo Edition – the claimed top speed is 230km/h. The claimed fuel economy is 8.4L/100km for the GTS and 8.6L/100km for the Morizo Edition.
For now, there will be two 2023 Toyota GR Corolla models in Australia: the “entry-level” GTS ($62,300 plus on-road costs), of which Australia will get 700 units in the first year of production, and the higher-performance Morizo Edition ($77,800 +ORC), of which only 25 units will be sold.
Standard equipment on the GTS includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic all-LED lighting, auto wipers, heated and auto-folding mirrors, a leather steering wheel and gear knob, keyless entry and start, synthetic leather and suede upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, satellite navigation, digital radio, an eight-speaker JBL sound system, a wireless phone charger, dual-zone climate control, rear privacy glass, a tyre repair kit, front and rear Torsen limited-slip differentials, three modes for the all-wheel drive system to change the power distribution split (60:40 front to rear, 30:70 or 50:50), a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and Toyota Connected Services for features like live traffic, automatic SOS calling and a smartphone app to locate your car.
Safety kit includes seven airbags, automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian, cyclist and intersection assist, auto high beam, a heads-up display, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance with lane trace assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, speed sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera.
Over the GTS, the Morizo Edition adds a carbon fibre roof, BBS 18-inch forged alloy wheels, a unique shift knob, GR badging on the intercooler, more torque and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect tyres, while deleting the dual-zone climate control (single-zone remains), heated steering wheel, satellite navigation, wireless phone charger, rear seats, parking sensors from the GTS for lower weight.
For colour options, the GTS is available in ‘Glacier White’, ‘Ebony’, ‘Liquid Mercury’ and ‘Feverish Red’, while the Morizo Edition is available in ‘Frosted White Pearl’ and ‘Tarmac Black’ with ‘Matte Steel’ matte grey paint available for a further $2,500.
