After what feels like an eternity after it was revealed, the 2023 Nissan X-Trail is now on sale in Australia. Priced from $36,750 plus on-road costs, the new X-Trail is all new – it has a new engine, a new platform, new exterior and interior styling and in good news for those wanting a hybrid SUV, an ‘e-Power’ hybrid is due next year. The X-Trail competes with cars like the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and the Mitsubishi Outlander, which shares its mechanicals.
“The X-Trail isn’t just an important model for Nissan, it has also been an important model for so many Australian families, with more than 282,000 examples of this flexible SUV sold here since its launch in 2001 – making it our second best-selling model over that period,” says Adam Paterson, managing director, Nissan Australia.
“That’s a big legacy to live up to, but the fourth-generation Nissan X-Trail does exactly that, arriving with more power, more capability, more technology and better safety than ever before.
For now, there will only be one available engine in the 2023 Nissan X-Trail: a 135kW/244Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that’s also used under the bonnet of the Mitsubishi Outlander. It’s mated to a CVT automatic transmission and is available with either front- or all-wheel drive. Fuel consumption is rated between 7.4L/100km and 7.8L/100km, while CO2 emissions are rated between 174g/km and 183g/km.
Under the bonnet of the X-Trail e-Power hybrid (which arrives in early 2023) is a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine mated to two electric motors (the front one makes 150kW/330Nm and the rear one makes 100kW/195Nm) for 157kW in total. The all-wheel drive-only hybrid is rated at 6.1L/100km on a combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 139g/km – 44g/km less than the all-wheel drive petrol X-Trail, despite pumping out 22kW more power.
Standard equipment on the entry-level 2023 Nissan X-Trail ST (from $36,750 plus on-road costs – available in either front-wheel drive five-seat or all-wheel drive seven-seat forms) includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED lighting, roof rails, heated/auto-folding mirrors, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a six-speaker sound system.
Safety kit includes seven airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian, cyclist and intersection assist, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, rear auto braking, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, traffic sign recognition and driver attention monitoring.
The next-step-up X-Trail ST-L (from $43,190 +ORC – available in either front-wheel drive five-seat or all-wheel drive seven-seat forms) adds larger 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery with heated front seats, a 10-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory, front fog lights, front parking sensors, a 360-degree parking camera, 40:20:40-split rear seats that also slide, lane keep assist and lane trace assist.
The X-Trail Ti ($49,990 +ORC – five-seat and all-wheel drive only) adds Matrix headlights with adaptive high beam, a panoramic sunroof, a power tailgate, automatic wipers, a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, wireless charging, a 10-way electrically adjustable front passenger seat, ambient lighting, tri-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, a 10.8-inch heads-up display and leather trim.
Finally, the top-spec X-Trail Ti-L ($52,990 + ORC – five-seat and all-wheel drive only) adds quilted Nappa leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, door ambient lighting, rear door shades and kick-to-open functionality for the electric tailgate.
There are two e-Power hybrid variants: the $54,190 +ORC Ti and $57,190 +ORC Ti-L, which share equipment levels with their petrol-powered variants, though the Ti-L adds 20-inch wheels.
