Australian pricing and specifications for the 2023 Mercedes-Benz A-Class have been announced ahead of its arrival into showrooms later this month. Featuring a revised model range with the A200 now serving as the entry point, more standard equipment across the range and new 48V mild-hybrid drivetrains across the range (aside from the fire-breathing AMG A45 S), the price of entry to the A-Class range has climbed by $10,000 more (before on-road costs) to compensate for the improvements. To simplify the range, the plug-in hybrid A250e has been culled from Australia.
A mid-life facelift for the current shape A-Class, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz A-Class has a larger front grille, revised front and rear lighting units, new wheel designs, an AMG nappa leather steering wheel, new features for the ‘MBUX’ operating system such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the removal of the former touchpad on the centre console and an additional USB-C port.
Under the bonnet of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, from July production, the company has added 48V mild-hybrid drivetrains to all models except the top-spec AMG A45 S. The A200 is now the entry point to the range and it uses a 120kW/270Nm 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Mercedes-Benz claims an 8.3-second 0-100km/h sprint time with combined fuel consumption rated at 5.7L/100km for the sedan and 5.8L/100km for the hatch.
The upper-spec A250 replaces the 1.3L engine with a larger 2.0-litre engine for 165kW/350Nm outputs, and a 6.3 0-100km/h sprint time. Its fuel consumption is rated at 7.0L/100km.
The AMG A35 uses the same 2.0-litre engine but makes 225kW/400Nm. Its 0-100km/h sprint time is just 4.9 seconds, and its economy is rated at 7.9L/100km for the sedan and 8.2L/100km for the hatchback. Finally, the AMG A45 S uprates power to 310kW/500Nm and hits 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds. Its economy is rated at 8.9L/100km.
Standard equipment on the 2023 Mercedes-Benz A200 (hatch: $61,900 +ORC, sedan: $63,400 +ORC) includes automatic all-LED lighting, auto wipers, 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, a sunroof, ‘Artico’ synthetic leather and suede upholstery, electric front seat adjustment with driver’s memory functionality, single-zone climate control, heated front seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with the company’s ‘MBUX’ operating system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, digital radio, satellite navigation and a wireless phone charger.
Safety kit includes nine airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, side exit assist, adaptive cruise control, auto high beam, front and rear parking sensors with auto parking and a 360-degree camera.
The second-from-base A250 (hatch: $71,900 +ORC, sedan: $73,400 +ORC) adds a larger engine, multi-link rear suspension and all-wheel drive.
The AMG A35 (hatch: $87,900 +ORC, sedan: $89,400 +ORC) adds 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, adaptive dampers, black leather upholstery, a 590-watt Burmester sound system, projector LED headlights with adaptive high beam, a heads-up display, dual-zone climate control, lane trace assist, front cross-traffic alert, augmented reality sat-nav, traffic jam assist, gesture control, traffic sign reocnigition, intelligent speed assist, illuminated front door sills, tyre pressure monitoring, rear privacy glass and remote theft protection.
Finally, the top-spec AMG A45 S (hatch only: $119,900 +ORC) adds larger 19-inch wheels, red brake callipers and AMG-specific exterior styling.
Optionally available for both the A200 and A250 is the $4,900 Plus Package, which adds much of the equipment that the AMG A35 adds, such as a Burmester sound system, projector LED headlights, heads-up display, dual-zone climate control, front cross-traffic alert, lane trace assist, traffic jam assist, gesture control, speed sign recognition, illuminated front door sills and augmented reality navigation. The A200 and A250 can also be optioned with $1,600 full black leather upholstery.
The AMG A35 and AMG A45 S are available with a $3,500 Aerodynamics Package, which adds a gloss black rear spoiler, larger front splitter, lateral rear air outlets and a black rear diffuser blade.
Premium paint is now included for most colours, with ‘Digital White’, ‘Iridium Silver’, ‘Spectral Blue’, ‘Cosmos Black’, ‘Mountain Grey’ and ‘Sun Yellow’ (AMG A45 S only) included for no extra cost. The AMG A45 S-specific ‘Patagonia Red’ is the only cost colour option at $900 extra.
