New Jeep Avenger electric SUV can travel for up to 248 miles between charges, with plug-in and mild hybrid versions on the way...
On sale Summer 2023 | Price from £30,000
Not so long ago, the very idea of the new Jeep Avenger would have had you laughed out of its maker’s online forum. You see, as an electric SUV it’s unlike anything the car brand has made before.
Based on the same underpinnings as the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense and Vauxhall Mokka-E – both of which come from Jeep’s owner, Stellantis – the Jeep Avenger is powered by either two or four 94bhp electric motors, depending on whether you opt for a two or four-wheel drive model. That means up to 376bhp should be available if you go for the most powerful version.
The Avenger’s battery size has yet to be revealed, but it’s likely to be the 50kWh battery that powers the Avenger’s Vauxhall and DS counterparts – meaning a 10-80% charge could take as little as 30 minutes if you can find a suitably powerful charging point.
In the Avenger, that battery gives an official range of up to 248 miles. That’s more than you’ll get from the Avenger’s in-house siblings, but the Kia Niro EV and the MG ZS EV Long Range can take you further still.
Both plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid variants of the Avenger will join the line-up later on. It’s expected that mild-hybrid versions will use the 1.2-litre petrol engine that we recommend in various models from Peugeot and Vauxhall.
While we’ve yet to see inside the Avenger, Jeep officials have said that the model will come with a large boot to tempt in families. In the smaller Jeep Renegade we’ve found the infotainment software easy to use and quick to respond to inputs, but the material quality lags behind that of rivals.
The Avenger features classic Jeep styling cues, including the same X-shaped LED rear lights seen on the Renegade and the larger Jeep Wrangler as well as a bold front grille, which will be blanked off on pure electric versions.
Prices for the electric Avenger are expected to start from around £30,000, with the plug-in and mild hybrid versions costing slightly less. At that price, the Avenger will be more expensive than the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense and Mokka-e, but cheaper than the Peugeot e-2008 and the Niro EV.
