Alfa Romeo to follow up its 8C with a new halo super sports car with both combustion and EV powertrains
Alfa Romeo has teased a new supercar that will reaffirm its plan to create a new low-production high performance model, just as it did with the 8C Competizione in 2007. The new model is scheduled to be revealed in the first half of 2023 and will act as a bridge between its current combustion engined range and future all-electric models by offering both powertrain options.
Alfa’s no stranger to the limited-run halo model, often drawing from the technical toolbox of its Italian sister companies to create remarkable low-volume models like it did in 2007 with the 8C Competizione (based on the Maserati GranTurismo), and more recently its bespoke 4C and Giulia GTAm. This new model is expected to be called the 6C, however this could change in the lead up to the model’s reveal.
Confirmation of its two powertrains was made by Alfa Romeo chief executive officer Jean-Phillipe Imparato in2022, suggesting that it will draw its technical makeup from 2022's evo Car of the Year-winning Maserati MC20 which will also soon be available with an all-electric powertrain.
Given its connection to the MC20, the new Alfa Romeo’s technical layout will include a Dallara-built carbonfibre chassis as per the MC20. As for what will power the 6C, it's expected the Maserati's Nettuno V6 engine will be used, enabling a more cost-effective option when it comes to accommodating an electric alternative.
The electric model will swap the V6 powertrain for a combination of batteries and electric motors. As in the forthcoming MC20 Folgore, the battery pack will be stored in an upright configuration behind the cockpit mimicking the weight distribution of the combustion-powered version. The batteries will then drive three electric motors – one mounted on the front axle and a pair of motors on the rear.
The 6C’s design will draw inspiration from Alfa Romeo’s iconic racers of the ‘60s and ‘70s like the 33 Stradale, with organic curves and a triangular grille motif. Alfa Romeo has form when it comes to looking at its past when design a low-volume sports car for today, with the beautiful but flawed 2013 4C showing other manufacturers how retro styling can be reinterpreted to a modern aesthetic.
Its reveal expected in the first half of this year and production is expected to be split between combustion and electric models, and in both cases strictly limited as was the case with the 8C Competizione and Giulia GTA.
