Although Porsche’s most definitive model is the 911, these days it’s the Taycan that often steals the show. Porsche’s first, modern-day EV gave the Tesla Model S a worthy competitor from an established brand and now, the Porsche Taycan is blessed by the GTS moniker. How does it stack up to the rest of the lineup and does GTS still stand for the sweet spot in Porsche’s lineup?

When did Porsche introduce the GTS moniker?

The GTS moniker dates back to Porsche models from the 1980s, such as the 924 GTS and 928 GTS. But while those are top-of-the-line versions of their respective models, the newer GTS models are considered to be the perfect compromise between comfort, performance, and price.

The first of the modern Porsche models to get a GTS version was the 2008 Porsche Cayenne, which was followed by the 997-generation 911 GTS. While, initially, the 911 GTS was meant to be a special edition, celebrating the retirement of the 997, demand was so high that Porsche decided to introduce it as part of the model lineup.

What’s the performance of the Porsche Taycan GTS?

The Porsche Taycan GTS seems to follow the same philosophy as the other Porsche GTS models, currently on sale. It comfortably sits in the middle of the lineup with 590 horsepower (440 kilowatts) and 626 pound-feet (849 Nm). Moreover, the two electric motors sit on the rear axle (one for each rear wheel), which means that, just like the base Porsche Taycan, the Taycan GTS is rear-wheel-drive only.

This configuration allows for a 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Not bad for a car that weighs 5,077 pounds (2,303 kg). Meanwhile, the 93.4 kWh battery, with 800-volt architecture allows for a maximum range of 313 miles (504 km), while being able to charge from 5 to 80 percent in 22.5 minutes.

How different is the Porsche Taycan GTS in terms of styling?

In more recent times, the GTS versions have had relatively subtle changes to the exterior, compared to the lesser versions. With that being said, the Taycan GTS is still distinctive enough that you would know you are getting something more than the base model or even the Taycan 4S.

At the front, all versions of the Taycan are nearly identical, but the GTS brings a slight refresh, courtesy of bigger air ducts. They are not just bigger than on the base Taycan, but also bigger than the ones you get on the Taycan Turbo S. The headlight buckets and new chin spoiler are also blacked-out, which gives the Taycan GTS a more menacing look.

On the side, we get Turbo S Aero Design 20-inch, lightweight wheels with a black finish or optionally, 21-inch RS which reveal the bigger front brakes – the GTS upgrades to 15.4-inch (391 mm) front brake rotors, compared to the 14.2-inch (360.7 mm) pieces on the Taycan 4S and retains the same 14.1-inch (358 mm) rear discs as the lesser 4S.

The black motives continue to the side of the Taycan GTS’ lower body and transition towards the rear diffuser, which is finished ib gloss black, instead of the body color. The GTS is all about black accents, which we also find on the translucent taillight strip. Being a GTS, you also get black moldings surrounding the windows and the obligatory GTS badging.

The Taycan GTS cabin benefits from the optional black Race-Tex interior features, but even the standard, brushed aluminum, with black, anodized finish does a good job of underlining the car’s sportier intentions.

How much does a Porsche Taycan GTS cost?

As with other Porsche GTS models, the Taycan GTS is in the middle, not just in terms of performance, but also in terms of price. The base Porsche Taycan starts from $81,150, while the top-of-the-line Porsche Taycan Turbo S is set at $185,000, before options. The Porsche Taycan sits right in the middle, with a starting price of $132,750. However, this can easily be inflated with all the optional equipment and a Taycan GTS can easily reach the starting price of a Taycan Turbo S.

Who does the Porsche Taycan GTS compete with?

Tesla Model S

In terms of pricing, Tesla seems to be the better value for money. Even the current base version packs 670 horsepower, which is more than the Taycan GTS’ 590-horsepower figure. Moreover, the starting price of the Model S is $94,990 and even the Model S Plaid costs less, at $129,990. The base Model S is also capable of 320 miles (515 km) of range, at an average speed of 75 mph (121 km/h).

At 28.0 cubic feet (793 liters), the Model S is aims more generous in terms of luggage space, compared to the Taycan’s 14.3 cubic feet (405 liters). Moreover, the Model S has a hatchback-style rear end, which further enhances practicality. The only department, where Porsche might get the better of Tesla is the build quality, which is more consistent in the German model.

Conclusion

Porsche currently offers six models and with the introduction of the Taycan GTS, the three-letter-moniker now lives on all Porsche models. For a while now, GTS models have been the perfect blend of comfort, performance, and price and a go-to choice for those who want more than the base model, but don’t necessarily need to be the quickest. Just as the Panamera GTS, 911 GTS, or any other Porsche GTS model, the Taycan GTS is the perfect middle-ground.
