The 2022 Nissan Rogue is a two-row crossover SUV that competes in a burgeoning and competitive segment. It sits in a class with front-runners like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, in addition to other worthy rivals like the Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, and Hyundai Tucson. We got to spend some time in the 2022 Rogue and came away impressed with its sophisticated on-road manners as well as its off-road comfort and capability.

What’s new on the 2022 Nissan Rogue?
The Nissan Rogue was redesigned for 2021, so the 2022 model’s most notable change is under the hood. Gone is the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that sat in the space between the front fenders, which is now filled with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine (more on that later). The CVT has also been revised to help fuel efficiency and acceleration.

Choosing the right Nissan Rogue is easy as there are only four different trim levels to choose from:
- Rogue S: $27,360
- Rogue SV: $29,050
- Rogue SL: $33,710
- Rogue Platinum: $37,140
Each trim level comes standard in a front-drive configuration, but an all-wheel drivetrain can added for an extra $1,500.
Our tester for the week was a Rogue Platinum AWD model with a two-toned white and black color scheme and a tan interior. The total price, as tested, was $42,325, which included extra charges for exterior and interior lighting effects, the head-up display package, and a cargo protection package with a first-aid kit.
How does the 2022 Rogue drive?

On the road, the 2022 Nissan Rogue feels confident and comfortable. Its steering effort is easy, even when you select “sport mode,” and its brakes feel linear. However, the brake pedal does feel a little soft for our liking.
In terms of ride comfort, the Rogue feels excellent. Wind noise is minimal, even at highway speeds, but we did detect some road noise – so it’s not exactly a luxury car. Although we ultimately blame the larger 19-inch wheels on the Platinum trim for the bit of excessive noise, so lower trims may be quieter.
Otherwise, the Rogue feels surprisingly smooth, so much so that we could call it a “near-luxury crossover” with the serene in-cabin experience that it provides. That calmness isn’t compromised when the road gets rough, either.
During our light off-road driving, the Nissan Rogue felt about as comfortable when the road was paved. We did detect some noise being transmitted up through the suspension when driving on rougher gravel, but the ride felt smoother than we would expect.
Additionally, the car’s Intelligent AWD system works well as we even tried heavy acceleration tests from a dead stop on loose dirt. The car picked up traction quickly, and it worked even better with the “off-road” mode switched on. Ultimately, the 2022 Nissan Rogue was unexpectedly better than we thought it would be, and we liked its smooth driving dynamics over those of the Toyota RAV4 and the Subaru Forester.
Is the 2022 Nissan Rogue powerful?

Yes, the Nissan Rogue has plenty of pep in its step once you get it going. The turbocharged, three-cylinder VC engine under its hood may be small, but its 201 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque output feel strong. There’s plenty of mid-range torque, which makes getting onto the freeway easy and passing slower cars a breeze.
Our only gripe is that the Rogue is a little lazy when accelerating from a stop. It could have something to do with the Xtronic CVT or the turbocharger needing to build up boost, but it’s nothing that completely hinders the driving experience.
Also, the “VC” stands for “variable compression,” which means that the Rogue’s engine can vary is compression ratio – from 8.1 to 14:1 – depending on the driving situation. The lower ratio is for when more power is needed, like when accelerating heavily, while the higher number aids in better fuel economy, like when cruising on the highway.
Speaking of fuel efficiency, the EPA rates the 2022 Rogue at 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway (31 mpg combined). In our week of testing, we averaged around 26 mpg, which sounds low, but it could be a symptom of mostly city driving and the need for the engine to break in a little more.
How comfortable is the Nissan Rogue?
The Nissan Rogue is very comfortable for a compact crossover. There is plenty of head and leg room for the front seat occupants, and the rear-seat area can surely accommodate tall adults. Our tester even came with a separate climate control for the second row in addition to heated seats.
One handy touch is that the rear doors open up to a wide 90-degree angle, which makes loading car seats and cargo much easier. The rear seat also folds flat to reveal 72 cubic feet of cargo volume, which is about double than when its folded up (36.2 cubic feet).
Otherwise, plenty of soft-touch surfaces are found around the cabin, even in the places you never touch, like the dashboard. The wood trim is a nice touch as well. All of the buttons and knobs are well-placed and are within easy reach of the driver and passenger.
We can’t forget about the quilted semi-aniline leather upholstery, which is very soft. Also, the front “zero gravity” seats provide enough comfort that even an astronaut would give them a pass.

Yes, the 2022 Nissan Rogue provides all of the tech features you could need. Every Rogue comes standard with LED head and taillights, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and Apple Carplay/Android Auto. Opting for higher trim levels like the Rogue SV and SL opens up more tech-savvy features like a 360-degree camera, a tri-zone auto climate control, power-adjustable seats, and memory for the driver’s seat.
Stepping up to Rogue Platinum unlocks even more technology, like a 12.3-inch digital gauge package, a 10.8-inch head-up display, and a wireless phone charger. Wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay are also present, as is a premium Bose Audio system. One thing to note is that Apple Carplay didn’t connect every time we got into the car, but it can be toggled on manually through the infotainment system.
Is the Nissan Rogue safe?

Yes, every 2022 Nissan Rogue comes with the brand’s Safety Shield 360 suite of driver-assist features. This suite includes features like adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, a rear-cross traffic alert, and blind-spot detection.
These features complement the car’s ProPilot Assist, which uses adaptive cruise control and lane assist technologies to keep the car centered in the lane when driving. On the Platinum trim, they even connect to the onboard navigation system to limit the car’s speed to correspond to speed limits, curves, and freeway off ramps.
In case those safety aids aren’t enough for you, the 2022 Nissan Rogue also received a Top Safety Pick + award from the IIHS and a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.
How reliable is the 2022 Nissan Rogue?
The 2022 Nissan Rogue is very reliable as it has a “great” reliability score of 82 out of 100 from JD Power. We wouldn’t be surprised if Nissan Rogue owners could easily get over 200,000 miles out of their cars. Also, maintenance is fairly inexpensive.
Edmunds predicts that it should cost an average of $5,599 to maintain a Rogue for the first five years of ownership and only around $744 for repairs during that time. Fortunately, the Rogue is also covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain, which can cut down on some unforeseen repair costs in the first few years.
