Maruti claims that the new Baleno achieves the highest fuel efficiency figures in the premium hatchback segment
The all-new second-generation Maruti Suzuki Baleno has evolved in many ways. The new car gets a heavily revised exterior, all-new cabin layout, a longer equipment list and a new petrol-powered heart under the hood.
Talking about this new engine, the new 1.2-litre K12N four-cylinder petrol engine of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno claims a fuel efficiency figure of 22.35 km/l with the 5-speed manual and 22.94 km/l with the 5-speed AMT gearbox. A video by ‘MRD Cars’ shows the real-world fuel efficiency of the new Maruti Suzuki Baleno manual.
Overview
We recently drove the 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno and here is a link to the review.
The new heavily updated 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno now gets a 1.2-litre K12N four-cylinder petrol engine, which first debuted in the Dzire and later found its way under the hood of the Swift. The new engine produces 90 PS of maximum power – around 7 PS more than before, while the peak torque output remains the same at 113 Nm.
In addition to power output, the new Baleno gets significant improvement in fuel efficiency as well. The new Baleno now returns 22.35 km/l with the manual version and 22.94 km/l with the AMT version, as tested by ARAI under test conditions.
What is the real-world fuel-efficiency of the new Baleno?
After driving on the open highways for sometime, the displayed fuel-efficiency increases
The owner of the vehicle takes the Maruti Suzuki Baleno around. It is the top-spec Alpha variant. The driver takes the car to a fuel pump and fills the 37-litre tank to the brim.
The driver takes off to drive the car in a mixed condition. According to the video, he drives the Baleno in regular city traffic conditions, long highway stretches and even in heavy traffic jams.
Since it is a top-end variant, they keep checking the real-time fuel efficiency on the HUD
After taking the car around, the fuel efficiency in the MID of the instrument console was 11.1 km/l. But driving the Baleno further, the fuel efficiency figure started to rise gradually. After driving extensively on highways, the MID even displayed a figure of 21.4 km/l at one point in time. The presenter was also stuck in heavy traffic conditions a couple of times, and during these instances, the fuel efficiency of the Baleno dropped to 19 km/l according to ARAI.
After a long drive inside the city, on the highways and getting stuck in a jam, they reach the fuel station
After driving for 121 km in mixed conditions, the driver refills the fuel tank at the station to the auto cut level. The fuel station reading shows that the Baleno consumed 6.79 litres of fuel in the drive.
What is the real-world fuel efficiency of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno?
After driving for more than 100 km at an average speed of 71 km/h, it took 6.79 litres of fuel
For 121 km of drive, the Baleno consumed 6.79 litres of petrol. The display shows that the new Baleno returned a combined fuel efficiency of 17.82 km/l.
The real-world figure is also significantly lower than the ARAI-claimed fuel-efficiency figure of 22.35 km/l for the new Baleno. Given that the car drives for 80 km on highways and 40 km in the city traffic, the real-world fuel efficiency of the Baleno seems quite good.
The new Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the most fuel-efficient car in the segment
The real-world fuel efficiency of all the cars is much lower than the standard tests done by ARAI. This is because ARAI tests the car under different conditions and the real-world conditions are very different.
