Almost 10 years after launching the Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi has added a second coming: the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV. Using the same 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor drivetrain as the larger Outlander, an all-electric range of 55km is possible, according to Mitsubishi. The Eclipse Cross PHEV will be offered in three models and it’s priced from $46,490 plus on-road costs.
“The arrival of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Plug-in Hybrid EV completes the renewal of the Eclipse Cross SUV range in Australia. It brings a proven and successful zero or low emission powertrain that will meet the real-world needs of Australian SUV buyers looking to reduce their environmental impact,” said Shaun Westcott, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd.
“The Eclipse Cross has been successful in attracting customers to the Mitsubishi brand over the past four years. With the new look, enhanced technological specifications and the new Plug-in Hybrid option, we have a vehicle that will be even more appealing to urban couples or families who want a car that fulfils a number of diverse needs.”
Aside from the mechanicals, the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV remains unchanged after a heavy facelift earlier in the year – though thanks to packaging the battery pack, the bootspace has retracted from 405-litres to 359L.
Under the bonnet of the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV is a 94kW/199Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that’s matched to 60kW/137Nm front and 70kW/195Nm rear electric motors, which draw power from a 13.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Mitsubishi claims fuel consumption of just 1.9L/100km (fully charged) with an all-electric range of 55km. Using a home wall charger, it takes seven hours to fully recharge and just 25 minutes to 80 per cent using an AC public charger.
Standard kit on the entry-level Eclipse Cross PHEV ES ($46,490 plus on-road costs) includes 18-inch alloy wheels, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, digital radio, a four-speaker sound system, climate control, cruise control,
Safety equipment includes seven airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning, active yaw control and a reversing camera.
The mid-spec PHEV Aspire ($49,990) adds LED lighting, suede and synthetic leather upholstery with heated front seats, a powered driver’s seat, an eight-speaker sound system, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, lane change assist, a 360-degree parking camera with front parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
Finally, the top-spec PHEV Exceed ($53,990) adds a double-panel sunroof, a heated steering wheel, full leather upholstery, a power passenger’s seat, heated rear seats, a heads-up display, inbuilt TomTom satellite navigation and a black interior headliner.
