The Mazda CX-3 compact SUV line-up has been updated here in Malaysia, with the addition of two new base-spec ‘Core’ variants. And while Bermaz Motor has yet to official launch the new variants, complete details are already now available on the company’s website, with several dealerships now already taking orders.
Joining the existing Mazda CX-3 2.0L 2WD High here in Malaysia are the new 1.5L and 2.0L 2WD Core variants, with prices starting from RM107,870 for the 1.5-litre model, moving up to RM118,159 for the 2.0L 2WD Core, and RM131,359 for the range-topping 2.0L 2WD High variant. Starting with the 2022 model, the Mazda CX-3 is also now fully imported (CBU) from Thailand instead of Japan.
The new Mazda CX-3 1.5L 2WD Core is powered by the same Skyactiv-G 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine as seen on the Mazda 2, which offers 114 hp and 149 Nm. The 2.0L Core meanwhile shares the same powertrain as the existing High variant, with a 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G mill underneath the bonnet serving up 154 hp and 206 Nm of torque.
Both engine options are paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox to send power to the front wheels. As for equipment, both Core variants are identically specified; the only difference to justify the RM10k jump in price is the larger engine capacity.
As the name suggests, the Core variants are the new entry-level base-spec models, with standard equipment to match. The 18-inch wheels from the High are swapped out for smaller 16-inch items, while all exterior lighting are also now halogen-illuminated instead of LED – the headlights also come without automatic on/off and levelling functions.
On the inside, the Core variants also omits the head-up display, paddle shifters, Qi wireless charger, powered sunroof, and the powered driver’s seat from the High. Automatic air-conditioning is swapped out for a manual unit, while the seats are also covered in fabric instead of leatherette.
The Core variants do get the new eight-inch infotainment display that was introduced on the High variant earlier this year, but the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features are limited to wired connectivity only. Keyless entry with push-start button, electronic parking brake, G-Vectoring Control (GVC), as well as the selectable driving modes are also inherited from the range-topping 2.0L 2WD High.
As for safety, the new Mazda CX-3 1.5L and 2.0L 2WD Core variants misses out on the advanced safety features that were introduced on the model here in Malaysia back in 2021. The airbag count has also dropped from six to two, while the 360-degree surround view monitor is swapped out for a basic reverse camera.
