New Maserati Grecale large SUV gets mild hybrid and V6 power, with a fully electric version on the way…
On sale: Autumn 2022 | Price from: £50,000 (est)
The most successful supermarkets realised long ago that variety really is the spice of life. Catering for different tastes is not easy, but if you offer buyers enough choice, they’ll probably pick up something from your shelves. The new Maserati Grecale is taking the same approach, offering a variety of power options to distinguish itself from a field of talented large SUV rivals.
From launch, two petrol engines will be available – a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (with a 48V mild-hybrid system) and a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6. The V6 produces 325bhp and 332lb ft of torque as standard, and can shift the Grecale to 62mph in just 5.3sec. Power and torque are upped to 523bhp and 457lb ft respectively in range-topping Trofeo versions – and the 0-62mph sprint time falls to just 3.8sec. That’s an exact match with the rival Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and BMW X3 M Competition.
The mild-hybrid version has a healthy 296bhp and 332lb ft of torque. All cars feature the same four-wheel drive system and eight-speed automatic gearbox.
A year after the petrol versions go on sale, a fully electric Grecale will arrive with a 105kWh battery and dual electric motors. The electric SUV version’s official range should be in the region of 300 miles, which is slightly more than the 285-mile range of the BMW iX3 and is likely to match that of the upcoming electric Porsche Macan (due later this year).
Inside, there are dual touchscreens for infotainment and climate controls, with the former measuring 12.3in and the latter 8.8in. This could be a backwards step next to the larger Levante, which has a rotary controller to help you make inputs on the move. Maserati has not yet released boot space figures, but the Stelvio on which the Grecale is based can take your holiday luggage without any trouble, so it should have a useful amount.
Pricing has not been announced either, but we expect the Grecale to start from £50,000, which is in line with the £50,935 starting price of the current (non-electric) Macan.
