As in years past, in 2022 the Porsche 911 is the gold standard that all high-end sports car makers aim for. And one of the 911’s fiercest rivals is the Jaguar F-Type, which is fresh off some updates and a lineup overhaul. But have these revisions made the 2022 F-Type more than just a cheaper 911 alternative? Or is Porsche still waving that sports car standard?

Up until last year, the Jaguar F-Type was available with a variety of turbocharged and supercharged engines. For 2022, though, that’s been whittled down to just one: the supercharged 5.0-liter V8. The good news is the RWD F-Type is still around, albeit only in base P450 form. But if maximum speed is the name of the game, you need the AWD-only 2022 F-Type R. And with 575 hp under its hood, it’s more powerful than any 911 without a Turbo or GT3 in its name.

Is the 2022 Jaguar F-Type as fast as the 2022 Porsche 911?

Speaking of the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 and Turbo, they won’t be included in this comparison for cost reasons. However, the 911 doesn’t need the Turbo’s power or the GT3’s crazy engine to be faster than the F-Type.

Despite its power deficit, the base 2022 Porsche 911 Carrera hits 60 mph sooner than the P450 F-Type. And that’s using Porsche’s official 0-60 estimates, which are on the conservative side. How do we know? Well, Car and Driver hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds with a manual Carrera S, 0.7 seconds faster than Porsche’s claim.

Furthermore, that same Carrera S was only 0.1 seconds slower through the ¼-mile than the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe. In both 0-60 and ¼-mile testing, the 2022 911 Carrera GTS smoked the F-Type R. The most powerful F-Type is faster than some 2022 911s, but overall, Porsche’s sports car is faster.

The F-Type is rowdier, but the 911 carves corners better

It might be slower than the 911, but the 2022 Jaguar F-Type has its own charms. Namely, a supercharged V8 soundtrack that, in a tunnel, “sounds like God pulling on the metal ripcord of the world’s largest, gnarliest Beyblade,” The Drive says. And even with its standard active exhaust, the 2022 911 GTS can’t match its crackling intensity.

In addition, the 2022 F-Type benefits from the 2021 model’s enhancements. To try and tame its snarling sports car slightly, Jaguar gave it new shocks, springs, sway bars, and rear knuckles. Plus, it fitted wider tires. As a result, the F-Type rides better than before and has more steering feel, Car and Driver reports.

Unfortunately for the charismatic Jag, it’s still not quite as sharp as the 2022 Porsche 911. Its steering and handling are “acceptable,” but they’re not 911-level, The Drive notes. Also, Jaguar’s updates haven’t quite quelled the F-Type steering’s twitchiness. And its brakes, though strong, aren’t quite as confidence-inspiring as the 911’s stoppers. Plus, likely thanks to its larger curb weight, the F-Type doesn’t stop as quickly as the Porsche.

Meanwhile, the 2022 Porsche 911 is…well, it’s a 911. There’s a dizzying array of models to choose from, sure. But regardless of which you pick, you’re getting arguably the best sports car money can buy. The 2022 911 has communicative steering, solid brakes, impeccable handling, and a comfier ride than the Jaguar F-Type. Furthermore, unlike the F-Type, the 911 still offers a manual.

It’s worth noting that the 2022 Jaguar F-Type isn’t a bad sports car by any means. But in virtually every dynamic test apart from exhaust note, the 911 is one step beyond it.

Is the Jaguar as luxurious as the Porsche?

Handling wasn’t the only thing Jaguar upgraded on the F-Type last year. Besides updating the exterior styling and fitting LED taillights, Jaguar also gave it a 12.3” digital gauge cluster. Plus, even the base P450 comes standard with a 10” center touchscreen, navigation, leather upholstery, chrome interior trim, and multiple advanced driver-assistance features. And if you step all the way up to the F-Type R, you get things like Windsor leather performance seats, keyless entry, an aluminum center console, and a powered tailgate.

If you look at the features list, the F-Type beat the 2022 Porsche 911 out in some areas. For example, the 911 doesn’t come standard with lane-keeping assist and lane-departure warning. Also, while the 2022 Carrera has eight speakers, the P450 F-Type has 10 as standard. However, dig a little deeper and the Porsche starts pulling ahead. Its touchscreen is slightly bigger, for one, and it has wireless Apple CarPlay, not wired like the Jag. In addition, heated front seats are standard.

Speaking of seating, the 2022 Porsche 911 has rear seats, while the F-Type is a two-seater. Plus, the 911’s seats are more comfortable over long distances, The Drive notes. On top of that, the Jaguar F-Type’s interior is noticeably tighter. The F-Type Coupe does have slightly more cargo space than the 911, though. However, the F-Type Convertible’s trunk is tiny compared to the 911 Cabriolet’s frunk.

Is the 2022 Porsche 911 worth paying more for or should you save with the 2022 Jaguar F-Type?

Admittedly, some extra luxuries are almost expected given that the 2022 Porsche 911 costs more than the Jaguar F-Type. The base P450 F-Type RWD Coupe starts at $71,300—that’s roughly $30,000 less than the 2022 911 Carrera. Meanwhile, the 2022 F-Type R starts at $105,300 and the Carrera S starts at $117,100. And keep in mind, I’m quoting the RWD Carrera prices: AWD costs extra.

But is the 2022 911 worth the upcharge? It depends on your priorities. If you want the last word in high-end sports cars, Porsche’s iconic rear-engine machine beats the F-Type. And once you get into the more powerful trims, the Jag’s value proposition shrinks rapidly. Really, it’s a matter of whether you want that supercharged V8 roar or not. If you prefer the sound of fury rather than the fury of speed, go for it.
