2022 hyundai ioniq 5 review: this is the electric suv to beat

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Allison Barfield, MotorBiscuit

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 enters the scene with a blend of retro yet futuristic style to stand out against the crowd. It just made its debut for 2022 and instantly racked up tons of awards against rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y.

You can tell that the Ioniq 5 wasn’t rushed. The well-planned layout, innovative tech, and robust build quality are key characteristics that provide near-luxury comfort and convenience. Plus, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 can be equipped with all-wheel drive, has an impressive range of up to 303 miles, and has 350-kW DC fast charging capability.

While it’s a little short on cargo space, it provides plenty of passenger room and various options at affordable prices. It’s value-packed with a long list of standard features and has the most range for under $60,000.

Which Hyundai Ioniq trim is best?

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is offered in four trim levels:

  • 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range – $39,950
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE – $44,000
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL – $46,250
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited – $51,100

The SEL trim adds many comfort and convenience features without staying under $50,000. It packs 225 hp with an EPA-estimated 303 miles of range, but adding AWD reduces it to about 256 miles.

Upgrading to the SEL model adds simulated leather upholstery, a wireless phone charging pad, ambient interior lighting, a hands-free liftgate, rear air vents, a heated steering wheel, and front parking sensors.

But the top-spec Limited trim comes with the panoramic sunroof, 360-degree surround-view camera, ventilated seats, an eight-speaker premium Bose audio system, and a two-way charging system.

How does the Hyundai Ioniq 5 drive?

2022 hyundai ioniq 5 review: this is the electric suv to beat

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Hyundai

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is easy, comfortable, and engaging, with various settings to suit your mood. The SE model kicks things off with a single motor that churns out 168 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

It provides 225 hp in all other models. Adding AWD increases the power to 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque. According to Edmunds, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.6 seconds, which outpaces the Tesla Model Y.

The Ioniq 5 has instant torque to quickly get off the line with responsive handling and confident corning. The Ioniq 5 has plenty of grip and feels well-planed around sharp bends. It’s surprisingly athletic, giving the Mustang Mach-E a run for its money.

It has a low center of gravity, and the suspension can feel a bit soft at times. But there is a consistent feeling of control for peace of mind. It’s well-balanced to keep body motions in check.

The driving modes include Eco, Normal, Sport, and Snow. The Sport mode tightens the suspension and provides faster response times, while the Normal mode is a bit more relaxed. The brakes in the Sport mode are a bit stiffer and slower to respond.

Eco mode has the slowest acceleration and the squishiest breaks to replenish more energy for the battery pack. There’s also a costing mode and three different regenerative braking levels available.

You can use the i-Pedal mode to slow the vehicle down as soon as you lift your foot off the accelerator. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to test the Snow mode.

Can the Hyundai Ioniq 5 go off-roading?

2022 hyundai ioniq 5 review: this is the electric suv to beat

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Hyundai

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 does have AWD, but we wouldn’t push it too far in the wild. It only has a ground clearance of 6.1 inches. Light off-roading vehicles have at least eight inches of clearance.

It can certainly get you to your campsite and has suitable torque for slippery conditions. But it’s best suited for sticking to the pavement. We’re confident in its ability to handle snow, but it’s no rock climber.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 comfortable?

2022 hyundai ioniq 5 review: this is the electric suv to beat

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 reclining seat | Hyundai

Yes, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is extremely comfortable. The front-strut and five multi-link rear suspension setup is tuned for comfort. It absorbs impacts extremely well for a smooth ride. Even rough patches of the pavement are dampened with ease.

There’s only a tiny amount of body roll around curves at higher speeds. Also, the cabin is well-insulated to keep wind and road noise out. You can occasionally hear the whir of electric motors, but we think it sounds pretty neat.

If you want to relax, you can place the Ioniq 5 in Quiet mode to keep things peaceful. It also has sounds of nature available, such as waves crashing on the beach and a crackling campfire, to create a soothing environment.

The front seats are large and well-padded for hours of comfort. Plus, the driver’s seat can be equipped with an extendable leg rest, allowing you to stretch out. The front seats recline pretty far for taking breaks and napping.

Two adults can fit in the back without much fuss. Taller folks may want a little more legroom, but the seats are soft and supportive. Plus, the backrest sits at a relaxing angle.

The climate control system is solid and effective. You rarely have to adjust the controls. The heated seats and steering wheel warm up fairly quickly, and the ventilated seats provide relief on warm days.

How fast does the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 charge?

2022 hyundai ioniq 5 review: this is the electric suv to beat

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has impressive charging times and comes with a portable charging cable that can be used at home. But using a Level 1 charger or home outlet takes some time.

It can replenish the battery from 10 to 100 percent in about 58 hours for the standard battery and 68 hours for the long-range battery.

With a Level 2 charger or a 240-volt outlet, you can recharge the standard-range battery in about six hours. It takes around seven hours to fully recharge the long-range battery. A Level 2 charger can be professionally installed at your home by a licensed electrician.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has one of the fastest charging capabilities available. With a DC fast charger, the battery can go from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. If you’re in a rush, you can gain over 60 miles of range in as little as five minutes.

However, charging times may vary based on the temperature, weather, vehicle settings, and current battery levels.

Also, the charging port is in the rear, so you’ll want to either back into a charging station or pull up pretty close to make sure the charging cable can reach it.

How is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 interior?

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has a well-crafted, high-quality interior filled with premium, eco-friendly materials. It catches the eye with attractive shades of contrasting greys and white with unique checkered patterns.

The sliding center console and completely flat floor are pretty practical, and the doors open wide for easy access. The layout is well thought out, and everything you need is conveniently grouped.

For example, the driving modes and regenerative braking levels are right by the steering wheel instead of by the center console. However, some people may want for physical controls around the infotainment system.

Opting for the massive panoramic sunroof is an excellent decision. It has the right amount of tint to allow natural light to fill the cabin without being too bright. Also, the sunshades in the rear are a nice touch.

There are plenty of USB ports around the cabin, but the wireless phone charging pad sits slightly low. Forward visibility is pretty abundant, but thick C pillars may block your peripheral vision. Also, rear visibility is limited.

But opting for the parking sensors and the 360-degree surround view camera makes navigating around tight areas much easier. Plus, the Ioniq 5 is already agile.

Does the Hyundai Ioniq 5 have good tech?

2022 hyundai ioniq 5 review: this is the electric suv to beat

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Hyundai

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is loaded with modern and advanced tech that’s easy to use. The 12.0-inch touchscreen and 12.0-inch digital gauge cluster provide helpful information with attractive graphics with a unique retro style.

You can flip through menus to customize your settings in seconds. You can see your braking performance and how much energy is returned to the battery, and the closest charging stations are displayed on the home screen.

One of our only gripes involves how low the head-up display sits on the windshield. Shorter drivers can barely see it. Also, the parking sensors and lane-keeping assist systems can seem a bit sensitive with loud, distracting beeps.

But the rest of the features are helpful and, to be honest, pretty cool. The ambient lighting adjusts based on your driving mode. Sport mode provides bright red lightning, and Normal mode has a relaxing shade of blue.

If the car ahead of you pulls forward in a line of traffic or at red lights, then a gentle beep captures your attention. The Highway Driving Assist 2 feature is a nice blend of adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance

The optional heat pump efficiently heats the cabin without drawing as much power. Also, the two-way charging system allows you to charge devices such as laptops or even other electric vehicles.

How much cargo space does the Hyundai Ioniq 5 have?

2022 hyundai ioniq 5 review: this is the electric suv to beat

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 cargo space | Hyundai

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 features 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and up to 59.3 cubes in total. It trails rivals slightly but provides plenty of room for luggage and larger items. Plus, the seats fold flat to create a level cargo floor.

You’ll find plenty of storage bins and trays for smaller items, but the door and seat pockets are a little tight. There is a cubby under the dash, and the sliding center console has an open design allowing you to quickly place your bag between the front seats.

The front truck or frunk is a little lacking, though. It’s pretty much only large enough to store the charging cable.

If you need more space, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 can tow up to 3,500 lbs. But we didn’t test how towing affects the range.

How safe is the Hyundai Ioniq 5?

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+! It earned a Good score in most of the safety tests, which is the highest score possible. The seat belts earned a Marginal rating because the reminders aren’t loud enough.

The 2022 Ioniq 5 earned Superior ratings for its ability to avoid collisions at 12 and 25 mph speeds. At 37 mph, the Ioniq 5 provided a warning about 2.3 seconds before impact.

The child seat tethers are easy to find and attach. They aren’t easily confused with other hardware but sit too deep in the seat.

Standard safety features include:

  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Blind-spot intervention
  • Lane-keeping assist

Is the Hyundai Ioniq reliable?

2022 hyundai ioniq 5 review: this is the electric suv to beat

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Allison Barfield, MotorBiscuit

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has an average reliability rating. This vehicle is still brand new and needs o be put through the paces before gaining an official score. Its rating is based on how similar vehicles in the lineup compare.

MotorBiscuit awards the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 with an official score of 9.2 out 10

The experts at MotorBiscuit give the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 a rating of 9.2 out of 10. The Ioniq 5 is fast, comfortable, and advanced, with an average range and excellent charging times. It has unique characteristics to help it stand out in an increasingly crowded segment.

While it lacks cargo space compared to rivals, it’s still practical and versatile. Plus, it can be equipped with AWD, has a Snow mode, and can charge other electric vehicles in need. The innovative tech simplifies daily driving with entertaining perks.

The outward visibility could be improved, and it doesn’t have the ground clearance for off-roading. But it’s a confident and engaging option for curvy mountain roads. We hope to see how the 2023 model handles towing soon.
