Not long after its global reveal, the 2022 Genesis GV70 has been launched in Australia priced from $66,400 plus on-road costs. Competing in the premium mid-size SUV segment – the most competitive and popular premium segment globally – means that the GV70 competes with some big names: the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Lexus NX, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Jaguar F-Pace, Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Volvo XC60. Offering three drivetrains for now, the GV70 offers a lot of choice, which is something that premium brand shoppers love.
According to the company, “the first-ever GV70 takes the strengths of the Genesis brand – driving comfort and quietness – then adds confident, dynamic driving performance and new technologies to give the luxury, medium SUV segment a fresh, new direction.”
Stylistically, the 2022 Genesis GV70 is unlike anything else in its class – or anything else on the road, really. Its bold styling sets it apart in a rather conservative class – the handsome and assertive front is matched by a sleek side profile and a hatchback-like rear with the company’s usual ‘quad lamp’ lighting units. Wheels up to a huge 21-inches are available.
Measuring 4,715mm long, 1,630mm high, 1,910mm wide and with a 2,875mm long wheelbase, the GV70 measures 33mm longer, 17mm wider, 3mm less tall and with a 43mm-shorter wheelbase than the Audi Q5. The GV70’s boot measures 542-litres, 22L bigger than the Q5’s, with the seats up and 1,678L with them folded.
Like its larger GV80 sibling, the GV70 will be available with either rear- and all-wheel drive, as well as three engines that are all matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Entry-level models are powered by the same 224kW/422Nm 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as the GV80 and the G80 sedan – this engine is available as either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Combined fuel consumption for the RWD car is 9.8L/100km – the AWD is 10.3L/100km and the claimed 0-100km/h sprint time is just 6.1 seconds.
Above the 2.5T sits the 154kW/440Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that’s mated to an all-wheel drive system as standard. Claimed combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.8L/100km and 0-100km/h is completed in 7.9 seconds.
The top of the range GV70 is powered by a 279kW/530Nm 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V6 engine, again with all-wheel drive as standard kit. The 0-100km/h sprint time is claimed at just 5.1 seconds and fuel consumption is rated at 11.3L/100km combined.
Like other Genesis models, the GV70 is absolutely loaded with standard equipment. Standard kit includes 19-inch alloy wheels, all-LED lighting, auto lights and wipers, leather upholstery with a leather steering wheel, 12-way electric front seats with memory functionality, heated and ventilated front seats, a fingerprint authentication system, keyless entry and start with remote start, a 14.5-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, digital radio, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, tri-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, leather trim on the dashboard and doors, aluminium trim and an electric tailgate with hands-free opening.
Standard safety kit includes eight airbags (including a front centre unit), auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian, cyclist and intersection assist, auto high beam, speed limit assist, lane keep assist with lane follow assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, a 360-degree parking camera, driver attention monitoring, a blind-spot camera, an active bonnet and multi-collision braking.
In addition to the entry spec, the $4,500 (2.5T and 2.2D only) Sport Line Package adds 19-inch sports wheels, larger exhausts, a sport+ driving mode and a number of sportier details, including gloss black exterior trim, sports seats with Nappa leather and suede upholstery and a three-spoke steering wheel. The Sport Line Pack is standard on the 3.5T.
The $11,000 (2.5T and 2.2D – $6,600 on 3.5T) Luxury Package adds forward attention warning, reverse auto braking, Matrix headlights, rear privacy glass, 21-inch wheels, Nappa leather upholstery, 3D effect backlit trim, a 3D 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, a heads-up display, auto parking with remote control from the key, an 18-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat with massaging capability, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel and a 1,050W 16-speaker Lexicon sound system. The Luxury and Sport Lines can be combined for $13,000 on the 2.5T and 2.2D.
Like other Genesis models, the 2022 Genesis GV70 is offered with a wide variety of colours. No-cost options include ‘Uyuni White’, ‘Saville Silver’, ‘Himalayan Grey’, ‘Vik Black’, ‘Barossa Burgundy’, ‘Mauna Red’, ‘Cardiff Green’ and ‘Adriatic Blue’. $2,000-extra matte finishes include ‘Matternhorn White’, ‘Melbourne Grey’ and ‘Brunswick Green’ and like other Genesis models, a wide variety of interior options are available too with black, beige, brown, burgundy, green, blue and red available depending on the model chosen.
