After a long wait since its global reveal 18 months ago, the 2021 Peugeot 2008 has gone on sale priced from $34,990 plus on-road costs. Offered in two initial grades – Allure and GT Sport – the 2008 is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine in two power outputs. Competing against other small SUVs such as the Toyota C-HR, Hyundai Kona and Volkswagen T-Roc, the 2008 is an immensely important product for Peugeot in Australia, where small SUV sales are booming.
Peugeot Australia General Manager, Kate Gillis, said with this car representing a major leap forward in every aspect of design and engineering, its ‘all-new’ tag is perfectly justified.
“The all-new 2008 SUV is a serious contender in Australia’s highly competitive Light SUV market segment,” Ms Gillis said.
“Peugeot wanted to redefine the Light SUV class with all-new 2008 SUV and did exactly that by embracing three important areas that resonate with buyers –engineering, comfort and technology.
Sitting on Peugeot Citroen’s ‘CMP’ platform, which is shared with the Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa, the 2008 will offer a single 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine in two power forms: the Allure gets 96kW/230Nm and the GT Sport 114kW/240Nm. The Allure is mated to a six-speed auto and the GT Sport an eight-speed auto as standard and both are front-wheel drive.
The 2021 Peugeot 2008 measures 4,300mm long, 1,770mm wide, 1,550mm tall and features a 434-litre boot that expands to 1,437L with the rear seats folded. Peugeot claims the Allure is capable of combined fuel consumption of 6.5L/100km and the more powerful GT Sport less at 6.1L/100km. Performance is reasonable though – the Allure sprints to 100km/h in 9.3 seconds, and the GT Sport slightly quicker at 8.7 seconds.
For now, just two variants will be offered in the 2021 Peugeot 2008 range: the Allure and GT Sport – a GT-Line will reportedly be offered soon as well.
The $34,990 Allure offers a long list of standard kit, including six airbags, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, a 10-inch configurable digital driver’s display, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, digital radio, a reversing camera, auto lights and wipers, a leather steering wheel and single-zone climate control.
The $43,990 GT Sport then adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a more advanced AEB system with low light detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, auto high beam, a larger 10-inch touchscreen with inbuilt navigation, dual-zone climate control, Nappa leather upholstery, heated and massaging front seats, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and several sportier trim items.
Very little optional extras are available: a $1,990 panoramic glass sunroof for the GT Sport, while both models offer $690 metallic paint.
