Sportier 'coupe' version of seven-seat SUV could be produced in RHD; if so Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport could venture Down Under
New pictures of the previously unseen production version of the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport have leaked online overnight.
The new images, which surfaced on Carscoops, reveal a toned-down version of the original Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport that we drove in September.
Gone are the concept’s enormous wheels, gaping front air intake and slimline LED rear lights but, overall, the VW Atlas Cross Sport remains faithful to the concept that presented a more stylish alternative to the regular Atlas SUV.
Measuring in at an imposing 4905mm long, 1989mm wide and standing 1719mm tall, the Atlas Cross Sport rides on the same 2980mm wheelbase as the regular Atlas but is 132mm shorter and 59mm lower than the Atlas.
It’s not known if the production Atlas Cross Sport will still offer the option of seven seats or if it will be strictly a five-seater.
Under the bonnet, the Atlas Cross Sport is tipped to come with either a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder or more powerful 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine.
Senior Volkswagen executives have repeatedly refused to rule out right-hand drive production feasibility for the US-made Atlas, suggesting a similar story for the Atlas Cross Sport.
If right-hand drive is approved, Volkswagen Australia has already confirmed it would consider importing the Atlas to take advantage of Australia’s booming SUV market.
