Responding to customer pleas, the 2019 Ram 1500 Sport will now be available with the company’s excellent 12-inch touchscreen.
Customers will need to pop for the newly-titled Leather and Sound Group, a checkbox that will cost between $3590 and $3895 depending on cab and driveline configuration. In addition to the largest-in-class infotainment, Ram 1500 pickups equipped with this package will also find themselves in possession of a 900-watt Harman/Kardon sound system, plus leather seats with heating and ventilation for the front row.
The Uconnect system is now in its fourth iteration, imbued with speedy processing power and sharp graphics. Multi-touch gestures allow for intuitive commands for those who have grown up in the smartphone generation. The display offers single or split-screen capability, allowing drivers to plaster a single function – like navigation – over the entire screen or split it vertically and display audio information above ventilation commands, for example.
“Expanding the availability of the segment-leading 12-inch touchscreen is a direct response to market demand,” said Reid Bigland, the newly-minted boss of Ram Brand. “Customers have been asking for additional high-end features and now we’re delivering with benchmark technology and materials.”
The man has a point. Your author recently spent a week testing a 2019 Ram 1500 Sport in rural Nova Scotia and, without fail, every single person who showed an interest in the truck asked if it had that screen. Most were crestfallen to learn it was not packing 12-inches of technology. Those of us with long memories will recall Ram’s tagline used to be “That thing got a Hemi?” Today, it could easily be “Screens – that thing got any?”
Not to be left out, this new package is also extended to the Ram Rebel. This marks the first-time Ram has offered leather seating and high-end audio on the all-new 2019 Rebel model. The front leather chairs are heated with this new option group.
Earlier this year, Ram announced the addition of the big Uconnect unit to its popular Rebel trim, again citing response to customer demand, meaning the vast majority of the 2019 Ram 1500 lineup is now available with the 12-inch screen. Whether these additions are actually a response to demand or the company has simply cleared up a supply issue is beside the point – there’s an excellent chance they’ll sell every one they can make.
Built exclusively for Canada, 2019 Ram 1500 Sport features unique exterior design cues such as a colour-keyed appearance and snazzy wheel options. Its dual-exhaust outlet treatment is slick as well. Sport models with the small screen are already on dealer lots; look for ones with the jumbotron later this year.
