Mitsubishi’s attempt to crack the North American luxury sedan market.
MitsubishiBy the start of the 1990s, American car shoppers could choose among plenty of Japanese luxury sedans. Honda had the Acura Legend; Toyota had the Lexus LS 400; Nissan had the Infiniti Q45; and even Mazda was in the game with the 929.
Mitsubishi didn’t bring over the Debonair (though Hyundai eventually sold Debonair-based XG300s and XG350s here), so an enlarged Galant platform was used as the basis for a proper competitor for those other US-market sedans: the Mitsubishi Diamante. The first model year for the Diamante in North America was 1992, and here’s a centerfold magazine advertisement for that car.
