When Saab partnered with Fiat to build a new platform, the result was the Alfa Romeo 164, some other Italian cars we never got over here, and the Saab 9000. The 9000 arrived on our shores for the 1986 model year, confounding brand-loyal fanatics with a steering-column-mounted ignition switch and astounding import-car shoppers for whom interior space stood as the most important factor when choosing a sedan. You got antilock brakes and a driver’s-side airbag as standard equipment in the ’90 9000, which was impressive stuff for a car with a price starting at $25,495 that year (that’s about $56,775 in 2022 dollars). You got more interior space than any imported sedan other than the Rolls-Royce Silver Spur. Most importantly, you got seats (allegedly) inspired by the buckets in “Pigs in Space.”
