ldsmobile started the muscle car race when it introduced the Super 88 in the early 1950s. The Super 88 was equipped with a 4bbl carburetor and a lower rearend gear ratio for quicker acceloration. In 1956, the Super 88 added optional dual exhaust to help the engine breath better. In 1957, the epitome of the Oldsmobile “Hot Rod” was the J-2 version of the new 371 cubic inch engine and dual exhaust became standard for the model. The tripower topped Rocket was boasted as having 300 horsepower and 400 foot pounds of torque which made the Super 88 a true Road Rocket!
