We love Lego! And we love building Lego classic cars. You get (almost) as much satisfaction as you do from working on a real classic, but you can do it from the comfort of your living room, rather than the discomfort of a dark and draughty garage.
And while we can’t promise you won’t end up with skinned knuckles making these models, they are at least guaranteed not to leave any unsightly oil stains on the living room carpet.
Got the building bug? We’ve picked 12 of our favourite Lego legends – perfect to keep you busy this Christmas.

1. Ford Mustang
Set no: 10265 Pieces: 1471 Age: 16+ Price: £119.99
This tasty slab of 1960s Detroit muscle is all set for a bit of naughty night-time racing down (Lego) Main Street.
Decked out in blue with white stripes and fitted with a set of period five-spoke wheels, just like Frank Bullitt’s, this Mustang fastback has working steering and a detailed interior.
And if you find the standard 390cu in (6.4-litre) V8 a little lacking, the kit includes various tuning parts including a supercharger, side-exit exhausts and even a nitrous bottle.

2. Mini Cooper S Rally
Set no: 75894 Pieces: 481 Age: 8+ Price: £44.99
Ready for a victorious assault on the ’67 Monte-Carlo Rally, this cheeky red and white Mini comes with a pair of spare Minilite wheels on the roof and a full pit-stop station, including a set of jacks, tools and two tools chests to keep it ship-shape between stages.
Part of Lego’s Speed Champions series, this kit twins the classic Mini with a modern Mini John Cooper Works off-road buggy that looks ready to take on the Baja 1000, never mind the Monte. But we know which one we’d rather zoom around the kitchen floor.

3. Volkswagen Beetle
Set no: 10252 Pieces: 1167 Age: 16+ Price: £74.99
It might not be the fastest classic around, but the VW Bug is as recognisable as they come – even in Lego form.
OK, so the bonnet’s a little less curvy than usual but, replete with rooftop surfboard, four-cylinder motor in the boot and that all-important beige interior, this symbolic wagon is straight out of the ‘60s.
The best bit? It’s ready to hit the beach for a party, courtesy of a couple of cold ones bundled in.

4. Dodge Charger R/T
Set no: 75893 Pieces: 478 Age: 7+ Price: £34.99
Built to pound the quarter mile, this evil-looking black 1970 Charger R/T is kitted out with plain dog dish hubcaps but a giant, removable supercharger for its big-block V8.
It even comes with its own set of drag strip lights, and a foe, in the form of a modern Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. Who’s your money on?

5. London bus
Set no: 10258 Pieces: 1686 Age: 16+ Price: £109.99
Not a car, but certainly a classic, the iconic Routemaster has been immortalised in red plastic, and is impressively detailed, right down to the umbrella, newspaper and empty fizzy drink can previous passengers have left behind.
You can even choose between two adverts for the side: a classic 1950s-style poster, or a modern day London promo. Sadly, there’s no chance to dodge the fare, which is a considerable £109.99. Still, with 1686 pieces it should keep you busy.

6. Ferrari 250GTO (and friends)
Set no: 75889 Pieces: 841 Age: 8-14 Price: £106.45
There’s something for everybody in this three-car bundle of Ferrari legends, which also includes a mini museum and workshop, complete with trophy cabinet, ramp and fuel pump, plus a team of drivers and mechanics.
Naturally, we’ve got our eyes on the 250GTO, but F1 fans will get equally excited by the brick version of Jody Scheckter’s 1979 F1 Championship-winning 312 T4.
And bringing the set up to date, you also get a current 488GTE endurance racer, plus part of a race track so you can try out the downforce capabilities of its giant rear wing.

7. Porsche 911 turbo
Set no: 75895 Pieces: 180 Age: 7+ Price: £12.99
In a previous life this kit was green and sold together with a modern Porsche RSR racer. Now solo and finished in a less searing white, but looking every brick as good, it retains the key styling features of Porsche’s iconic 1974 911 turbo, including the whale tail rear spoiler and chunky impact bumpers.
And if your kids get bored of driving the 911 round the three cones included with the kit, they can take the fun on to their Microsoft Xbox with the Forza Horizon 4 Lego Speed Champions expansion pack (available at extra cost, in case you hadn’t guessed).

8. 1962 Volkswagen T1 campervan
Set no: 10220 Pieces: 1334 Age: 16+ Price: £84.99
A pristine ’62 VW campervan can set you back the better part of £40,000. Mercifully, this box-fresh model is yours for a mere £85 (or $120).
Replete with pleasing details, it might be too small for a camping trip but it’ll probably be a lot more enjoyable – though the jury’s still out on whether stepping on a Lego brick is more infuriating than tripping over a guy rope.
Assemble its 1334 pieces and you’ll find your compact camper carries everything from that iconic pop-up roof and split screen to a four-cylinder VW motor in the back, and curtains to keep out that blinding British sun.

9. James Bond Aston Martin DB5
Set no: 10262 Pieces: 1295 Age: 16+ Price: £129.99
Licensed by the makers of the James Bond films, and sure to thrill anyone lucky enough to receive it for a birthday or Christmas present, this highly detailed Aston Martin DB5 is fitted with various Q branch gadgets, including revolving numberplates, front-wing machine guns and – no joke, this – a working ejector seat.
Not cheap, at £129.99, but substantially more affordable than the £5.2m someone recently paid for one of the original Bond DB5s built to promote Goldfinger and Thunderball back in the 1960s.

10. Ferrari F40 Competizione
Set no: 75890 Pieces: 198 Age: 7+ Price: £12.99
The Competizione was Ferrari’s racing version of the F40, but this kit includes interchangeable spoilers, wheels, exhausts and body panels to transform it into the more familiar road car version of Enzo’s last great project.
Lego’s previous F40 kit comprised 1158 pieces and was aimed at big kids. This one has just 198 pieces, meaning it’s fun for any age.
