Like fraternal twins, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 2022 Kia EV6 — offspring of parent company Hyundai-Kia — share many familial traits but are actually quite different. Both are South Korean-made, long-range, all-electric compact SUVs and share an electric platform. And while that’s not where the similarities end, they’re certainly not identical twins … not even polar twins (sorry, just wanted to make the most out of a cursory Google search on twin types); in one of Cars.com’s most popular news articles of the past week, we parse out the many traits that prove these two EVs to be the products of separate zygotes — from head to mitosis.
The Ioniq 5 and EV6 differ in number of available batteries; starting price; sporty style versus an air of pragmatism; headroom; children’s car seat accommodation; degrees of poor turning circle; center console configuration; stereo controls, toggle versus tune ; cargo space; towing capacity; visibility; and complimentary DC fast-charging offers and warranties. Want to know which has the edge in each? Find full details on each of these contrasts below in the link to our No. 3 news story of the week.
In much, much bigger all-electric news (measured in pure mass, anyway), the sixth-place spot on this week’s countdown goes to Cars.com reviewer Aaron Bragman’s comprehensive critique of the all-new, bar-setting 2023 GMC Hummer EV pickup truck. Yes, the iconic Hummer is back to conjure images of Arnold Schwarzenegger pulling up to the zillionth Planet Hollywood opening or the “Entourage” cast to Urth Caffe — but not conjuring images of L.A. smog and rising sea levels for a change. That’s because this Hummer hums along entirely on battery-electric power for an estimated 329 miles per full charge. It’s as all-around awesome as you (mistakenly, perhaps) remember the early 2000s.
Noting dissatisfaction with the luxury-lacking cabin materials relative to the truck’s six-figure starting price as well as its efficiency towing limitations, Bragman’s review otherwise heralds the Hummer as the one to beat for all who come after. He lauds the pickup’s stunning 3-second 0-60 mph acceleration, tight turning, agility on or off the asphalt, styling flourishes and clever LED details — and further characterizes the Hummer EV as, basically, a 9,000-pound billboard ad for GM’s truck tech.
“I’m now far more curious about the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra EVs than I was before, having been given a sample of the technology that’s going to trickle down into those upcoming trucks in the next few years,” Bragman writes. “Until then, the Hummer EV remains the most awesome off-road electric vehicle out there.”
