For years the Titan has remained at the bottom of the list for most consumers. With competition like the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, Ram 1500, and even the Toyota Tundra available, the Nissan model is a far cry from the top. We think a complete redesign of the pickup would’ve helped the Titan for the 2023 model year.
According to Edmunds, the 2023 Nissan Titan is still part of the second generation of the model introduced in 2016. With a seven-year-old exterior and interior design, it’s no surprise the Titan looks outdated. Other parts of the truck also feel outdated. As the publication pointed out, the interior storage is subpar, something that other models have improved immensely in recent years. “It doesn’t have enough personality to make up for the lack of choice in powertrains, features and body styles that rivals offer,” Edmunds said.

In addition to the overall design of the full-size truck, the 2023 Nissan Titan is outdated in other ways. The powertrain lineup could also use a redesign. As it isn’t a lineup but just one unit, the Nissan model would benefit from more options. Every Titan comes with a 5.6-liter V8 engine making 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Most critics love the standard engine for its power, smooth ride, and capability. Although it can tow 9,310 pounds, the Titan isn’t near the top for its class.
Unfortunately, the standard V8 isn’t good enough. Competing full-size trucks have much more variety. For example, a smaller V6 engine enables customers to pay less for a truck if they don’t need a V8. Next, a hybrid option for improving fuel economy (and sometimes increasing power). Finally, many rivals offer a diesel option, which offers similar power and performance with longer-lasting capabilities and better fuel economy. Since the Titan has none of these options, many who desire them will choose a different model.

Finally, we believe the 2023 Nissan Titan could use a high-performance off-road-focused model. The most popular full-size trucks all have one in the lineup—for example, the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram TRX. Even the Chevy Silverado has the ZR2 model in its lineup, which pales in comparison to the Raptor and TRX but is more capable off-road than any Titan. Only the Pro-4X model is off-road capable in the Nissan’s lineup. Unfortunately, it only uses the same 5.6-liter engine and gets skid plates and four-wheel drive for off-roading.
In comparison, the Raptor has a high-output turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, good for 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. It gets 17-inch alloy wheels, 35-inch all-terrain tires, a 36-gallon gas tank, an off-roading suspension, adaptive Fox shock absorbers, and six upfitter switches. The Raptor R upgrade is much more expensive but adds a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with an output of 700 hp and 640 lb-ft. Ram’s TRX offering is similar in many ways.
These models sell well and draw attention to the full-size trucks. For the Nissan Titan, nothing comes close to competing with these popular models.

In conclusion, only one full-size truck desperately needs a redesign, the Nissan Titan. Many competitors received significant redesigns and upgrades as recent as the last few years. However, we’re getting close to a decade since the unpopular Titan has seen big changes. Without exterior and interior improvements, a few more powertrain options, and an off-road performance model, we don’t expect to see the Titan compete with the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, or Chevy Silverado for a while.
