This dust-coated 1970 Ford Falcon GT sat under a Queensland home for nearly 50 years, but that didn’t stop a frantic auction to own it.
With no reserve price and after more than 400 bids, a “one-of-one” 1970 Ford Falcon that sat under a Queensland home for nearly 50 years has sold for $230,000.
The Ford XY Falcon GT was coated in a thick layer of grime when it was pulled out from under Clive Anderson’s Coorparoo Queenslander earlier this month.
According to classic car specialist Rian Gaffy, Ford Motor Company sold the car to a Brisbane employee after the business used it for 12 months in 1970.
The employee then drove the car for about 16 months, before selling it to Mr Anderson in about 1972.
It was parked under the house, exposed to the elements without even a gate to keep it secure, in about 1976 and sat there for 47 years, until a frantic auction took place on Tuesday night.

The silver classic, complete with a pair of black racing stripes, was last registered in 1979.
It still has its original number plates and many other original features, most of which will have to be repaired or replaced if its new owner ever wants to drive it.
Under its striped bonnet, the car houses its original Ford factory-fitted battery terminals and original compliance plate.
It also bears its original 1979 Queensland registration sticker and comes with its service manual — a tattered green book with an illustration of the car on the front — and full vehicle history.

The Grays auction was won by a bidder in San Souci in Sydney’s south, who paid $230,000 to own the Ford.
“The car will be going down to Sydney,” said auctioneer Rian Gaffy.
“He (the buyer) is pretty pleased with it. He had one similar when he was a young bloke.
“He’s always wanted to buy another one, so when this one came up, he thought he’d jump on the chance.”
Mr Gaffy said he thought it was a “fair figure” for the classic car.
“It’s a unique car but needing full restoration, so I think that’s a fair price,” he said.

Mr Gaffy previously described the Ford as a “one-of-one” series — a “special build” that was originally owned by the Ford Motor Company.

The Ford XY Falcon GT was assembled in Broadmeadows, Melbourne between 1970 and 1972, during the golden era of Australian car manufacturing.
With about 1500 units made, it is considered one of the most collectable production cars ever to be made in Australia.
A yellow 1971 Ford Falcon XY GTHO — an ultra rare, souped up version of the GT — sold for $1.3 million in September 2021, the highest recorded price ever paid for an Australian-built car.
